Latest news

Here is news about the latest goings on at the allotment. Accompanying photos visible on  our Facebook page.

In November we had the first frosts, but that didn't stop us being busy: Christmas crafts workshop, pond digging, strawberry wall building, butterfly city pick up and plenty of manure spreading. The rainbow chard is still cropping well, if anyone fancies picking a handful.

Today, Saturday 30 Nov, as part of 'Hull Butterfly City', Constable Allotment will serve as a collection point for young Alder Buckthorn trees.

As they mature these trees will attract beautiful yellow Brimstone butterflies, which the project hopes will become more common across the city. Collection from 10am-4pm. We have 30 to give away, one per household, just tell us your postcode so distribution can be charted.

It's feels like we've had weeks of almost constant rain, but NO puddles on our veg beds. That's one of the many benefits of no-dig gardening!
By not digging and allowing worms to tunnel and create a permeable soil, several inches of rain can be absorbed rather than puddling or running off.
It also means we have a bigger reserve of absorbed water in the ground for next season.

50 peppers picked on Saturday!

...so now the big polytunnel is looking quite empty. Several children with their parents collecting young buckthorn trees for @hullbutterflycity have taken home a pepper as a bonus!

All this rain we've been having is helping the living roof on the roundhouse look lush and green. The succulent sedum plants we planted there, are good at soaking up water while it's wet and storing it for dry periods.

Adding a layer of well-rotted horse manure is something we do at this time of year. There's no need to dig it in, as that's a job the worms will do for us. Come the spring, the manure will be well combined with the soil.

Yarrow is a wild flower that we've been very happy to see spreading throughout the allotment in recent years. This autumn were helping it spread to the perimeters by scattering the seed. Yarrow is popular with insects and has been used in cold and flu remedies for centuries. It has many medicinal uses.

One of our successes this year has been the rainbow chard. A bright colourful stem and luscious leaf that can be cooked and eaten like spinach. To grow, it's very resistant to pests and disease. Going into November, it's still growing well and tasting great. Come along and pick some this weekend, if your passing by.
